2nd Westlands Brownies

Brownies is an organisation for girls aged 7 to 11 years. They meet weekly in St. Andrew's Church Hall during school term time. Here is what Brown Owl says about her pack:

"We usually have 24 Brownies in the pack. The adult in charge of the pack is a Brownie Guider but we call her Brown Owl. Her assistant is called Tawny Owl. We also have four young leaders (aged between 14 and 18yrs). All leaders are unpaid volunteers, who receive training from Girlguiding UK to help provide exciting and safe activities for the girls in their care.

Subscriptions are paid each term. The amount at present is £15. The amount covers the cost of rent, badges, craft materials, refreshments etc.

Each Brownie chooses the uniform she would like to wear from a range of options available. These can be ordered from the Trading Depot or online at www.guidingessentials.org.uk .For the first few weeks your daughter will be introduced to the Brownie story and will work through the "Becoming a Brownie Book". After about six weeks when she has completed all the activities and learned her promise and law she will be enrolled. This is a special ceremony and members of the family can all come too. When she gets enrolled each Brownie receives a Brownie Promise Box, plus a copy of the Brownie handbook and the Badge Book.

Brownie Guides have fun! At each meeting there is a planned programme of activities, which aim to help each girl develop at her own pace. Your daughter will have chance to take part in games and learn to be part of a team. She will also be encouraged to help at home. Helping others is all part of being a Brownie Guide. Brownies have special challenges and interest badges which she can work for outside the weekly Brownie meetings.

Every Brownie whatever your faith is encouraged to take an active part in the religion of your family and community. The Brownie Guide Promise asks you to do your best to do this. Our Brownie pack is attached to St Andrew's Church. As a pack we attend the monthly Family and Parade Service and enjoy taking part in the service, carrying the Brownie flag, helping with the service, collection etc. We hope that you will be able to join us."

For more information about visit the Brownies web site which is part of the Girlguiding Site . If you would like to be put in contact with Brown Owl please email Rev. Gardiner, or telephone him on (01782) 619594.
