History of the Church in the Westlands

St Andrew's Church Hall

The original St. Andrew's Church building.
A temporary construction erected in 1938 and still in use today as the church Hall

Westlands Methodist Church
St Andrews
Church of England

First service held in Tennis Pavilion 10 June 1932. Stone Laying and young peoples’ brick laying ceremonies Thursday 28th July 1938. Church (dual purpose building).

First service 8th December 1938, new church hall opened 21 September 1950.

Church rededicated 3rd December 1950 – after refurbishment and installation of pipe organ

30th January 1958 – Rooms 2, 3, 4 and kitchen opened

1980 – church refurbishment

3rd June 1984 – Westlands Methodist Church became St. Peter’s Methodist Church a more visual link to St Andrews.

St Andrews – mission church to St Giles Newcastle. Dual purpose building dedicated 14th May 1938 by the Bishop of Lichfield (Dr Edward S Woods).

1955 St Andrew’s became a conventional district. Foundation stone of new church as laid Saturday 8th July 1961. New church consecrated by Bishop of Lichfield (Dr A S Reeve) 15th September 1962.

10th Anniversary

Completion of Lady Chapel 26th September 1971

2003 Kitchen refurbishment to church hall.

2003 Creche Room constructed at rear of church

Peter and Andrew were brothers

1971 both churches changed the time of morning service to 10.30 a.m.

19th May 1973 Westlands Area of Ecumenical Experiment Promulgated.

Although in doctrine there is little of substance that separates out two traditions – our structures and practices in some areas are quite distinct.

The sacrament of Holy Communion is celebrated in both churches – by both congregations.

All children’s and young peoples groups are united
