Why sermons?

Our God is not silent, but speaks. The Holy Spirit has inspired the scriptures to be written, and they are accordingly God’s words. If we want to hear God speak today, our first port of call must therefore be the Bible, God’s word.

The church is the community of God gathered under his word, and a key part of our meeting times together is the hearing from him through his word.

St Andrew’s church is committed to the systematic exposition of the Bible. If this is not done properly, then God’s people will not hear God’s voice, will not know what delights or angers him, and simply will not know how to live their day to day lives.

Why sermon series?

Teaching from the Bible is our spiritual food, and it is important that we have a balanced diet.

We plan our teaching programme so that it covers a range of Old and New Testament passages, and a variety of key topics and doctrines.

Preaching on a portion of scripture over a number of weeks enables us to examine it in greater detail, and apply it more relevantly to our corporate and individual lives, than when we look at passages or topics in isolation.

Not all of our Sunday sermons will be in series; rather there will be ‘blocks’ of Sundays with series throughout the year.

How can I benefit most from sermons?

Here are some suggestions:
  • Why not bring your own Bible to church with you?

  • You could consider taking notes during the sermon?

  • How about talking to someone after the service about the sermon?

  • When you get home, would it be helpful to re-read the passage, and then speak to God about it in prayer?
