Service Types

Descriptions of our service types in alphabetical order

Christingle Service
Of European origin, this service with its gift to each child of a decorated orange with a candle in it, symbolises the death of Jesus Christ for the salvation of the World. The next united Christingle Service will be on the 27th November 2011 in St. Andrew's church.
Communion with Prayers for Healing
Every two months at one of our evening services there is an opportunity for members of the congregation to ask for specific prayer, as they kneel at the communion rail, either for themselves or for someone else.
Compline
The ancient Office of Compline or Night Prayer: the early Christians took over from the Jews the practice of offering prayer at fixed hours of the day. By the end of the 5th century the work of St Benedict had formalised the structure of seven "Day Hours" and a Night Office. The last of the "Day Hours" - Compline was absorbed into Evening Prayer by Archbishop Cranmer but Anglican spirituality has consistently shown signs of a need for an act of worship before retiring for the night.

At the Church in the Westlands we have held a service of Compline, using the revised Night Prayer booklet, at 9.00 pm every Saturday evening in St Andrew's since 1990. A faithful group of people take it in turn to lead this service and there is a time of intercession when we hold up the services for the next day, the ministers, the whole church family, the roads of the neighbourhood, the needs of the world, the sick, the needy, the bereaved, and any other areas of general concern.
Covenant Service
A service shared by both churches. It moves from praise of the Trinity to listening to the word in scripture, read and preached, then follows a penitential approach to the words of the Methodist covenant. It includes a contemporary version of the Covenant Prayer. More details are available on the Methodist Church Website.
Crib Service
A simple nativity play performed on Christmas eve by the childrenof our congregations to a packed church. What a superb way to start your Christmas celebration!
Day One
is the name for our Contemporary Worship Service on the first Sunday evening of each month and therefore on the first day of the week ... hence Day One. There are cards and bookmarks available in both churches giving details of dates and topics - please advertise the service to young and old. Worship is led by our own worship group. See the Day One page.
Family Service
The children and young people stay in church for the whole of these services, which are planned with them in mind.
Holy Communion
We welcome to the communion table all who are communicants in their own churches. If that is not true of you, then you are welcome to come to the table to receive a blessing, or to stay in your pew.
Memorial Service
The names of those who have died and whose funeral services were conducted by our ministers during the year will be read out. If you would like someone's name to be included please contact one of the ministers. This happens in November.
Morning Services
The content of our main morning services varies from week to week. Please see our notice sheet for more details.
Morning Prayer
Each week day morning at 7.30 am, a small group meet to say Morning Prayer in St. Andrew's Church. We are always happy to add to our list of those for whom we are praying, the names of those who are in particular need.
Toy Service
the children and young people are asked to bring good quality toys for which they have no further use, to church on a Sunday early in December each year. The toys are passed on to needy children.
United Evening Service
St. Andrew's and St. Peter's Churches unite for almost all our evening services. We alternate the venue on a monthly basis, with a communion service once a month.
